Section 1: Mastering Online Safety: Actionable Tips and Strategies

Protecting children online requires a multi-faceted approach. While Qustodio provides a powerful toolset, understanding fundamental online safety practices is crucial. Here are some essential tips:

  • Open Communication: Talk to your children about online safety. Explain the risks of interacting with strangers, sharing personal information, and encountering inappropriate content. Make it a regular conversation, not just a one-time lecture. How do you usually initiate these conversations with your kids?
  • Age-Appropriate Content: Monitor the types of websites and apps your child accesses. Many platforms have age restrictions, and it’s your responsibility to ensure they’re adhering to them. Use Qustodio’s features to help manage this.
  • Screen Time Limits: Excessive screen time can be detrimental to a child’s physical and mental health. Set realistic limits and stick to them. Qustodio’s screen time management tools can greatly assist in this process.
  • Privacy Settings: Review the privacy settings on all your child’s devices and social media accounts. Ensure that their information is protected and that they’re not sharing too much personal data.
  • Regular Monitoring: While Qustodio provides valuable monitoring tools, it’s still crucial to actively engage with your child’s online activity. Review their browsing history, social media activity, and app usage periodically. How often do you think is appropriate to check in?

Section 2: A Day in the Life: Qustodio in Action

Imagine this: It’s a busy weekday evening. You’re trying to finish work while simultaneously preparing dinner. Your 10-year-old, Liam, is supposed to be doing homework, but you hear the telltale sounds of online gaming. Before Qustodio, this scenario would lead to a stressful confrontation. Now, however, you quickly glance at the Qustodio app. You see Liam is exceeding his allocated screen time and is on a game you’ve previously blocked. With a few taps, you gently remind him of the agreed-upon rules, and he happily switches back to his homework. This is the peace of mind Qustodio provides. The ability to subtly guide and monitor, preventing potential issues before they escalate, is invaluable.

Compared to the kids add-on apps for several anti-virus programs, this standalone app is by far the most seamless and effective. I honestly could not believe how well this app worked for iOS. The features are not excessive what so ever and are extremely practical. The way in which the app is able to monitor across the whole device is unbelievable. Absolutely recommend. With 6 children in my home (5 boys) it is a necessity to have parental controls beyond those provided by Apple or Google. And since we allowed our kids to have cell phones (big mistake, I should have avoided this permission altogether) I wanted an app that would allow for text message monitoring as well. Most apps on the market do not do this. It allows me to see call logs too, and we have caught children lying about using the phone late into the night when they should be in bed.

Google family allows downtime rules but a child can always make calls during downtime. With Qustodio I can block any or some calls or allow only certain contacts. I can also remotely block certain individuals (such as those throwing F bombs around or bullying in group texts).

I love that Qustodio is multi platform. We have android, mac, and windows and it works on each one, which is huge and truly makes this a one stop shop platform. Took awhile but I finally figured out how to assign it to specific users on the macs. I can set email notices for search engine and text use of concerning words or phrases for all devices.

There are many things that could be made more intuitive and easy to access. I don’t understand why there is not a larger/better up front menu and the majority of the features are hidden in sub or sub-sub menus making them a challenge to find. Perhaps this is meant to keep avg users from getting overwhelmed, but when it comes to parental controls I would think the avg user is ready to step into it. We do block google search on cell phones all together as I have not figured out how to use this app to do more than just monitor internet. Kids can navigate to something bad even without searching keywords and you’ll never know.

My kids have found a few workarounds. Qustodio can block access to settings on the phone but when it starts to load my kids have found they can swipe/close it out fast enough to bypass it and get into and change settings. I’m not sure if they figured out how to bypass Qustodio from here or not. (Side note, they also figured out how to use Spotify to watch inappropriate videos, even though it is set to kids and family mode).

Overall very happy with the price and features of this app especially for a larger family. Paying per user per device would simply have been cost prohibitive. I highly recommend parents also place a wi-fi camera facing the computers. I use Yi brand which does not charge monthly user fees and you can use SD card for historical access. View Original Review

This is my fourth app purchased. I’ve trued NetNanny, Bark Aura, then Qustodio. NetNanny was easily defeated by my then 10 year old. Bark was fantastic until my now 12 year old was able to “force stop” then uninstall it, it’s a glitch with Android 14 OS. Aura was easily uninstall able.

Now Qustodio. I like that it can lock out access to the device settings aswellas the app settings. Another feature that the others didn’t have was prohibiting access to the camera. I am a foster parent and my child isn’t allowed to have their image on the web so it’s a plus for me. Qustodio allows you to block specific web sites along with the standard ones like social media and others. It allows you to set schedules and screen time limits. So far, this is the only one that hadn’t been defeated by my child. Money well spent!! View Original Review

I purchased this program for my adult special needs nephew. It blocked ALL “mature” websites and any inappropriate sites. I was able to restrict the timeframe of his use and had the internet shutdown at 11 p.m. and come back on at 7 a.m. It helped to keep his sleep cycle more normal. I loved everything about the program. If anyone is having challenges, you may need to review the settings to get the results you need. I do not have any complaints about the Qustodio program. It was a relief that I was able to keep my nephew happy and safe while using the internet. The program has been on his computer and the app on my cell phone since March of 2021. View Original Review

I’m cautiously optimistic. This software is for windows platforms, and my android phone.

I read a lot of bad reviews here, but most echo having an iPhone .. I don’t have an iPhone. Also I don’t have an issue with my kids shutting it off. It would be far worse if they deleted the app. I don’t give two hoots if they have technology, and they know it. I’m going out of my way to help them develop self governance and self discipline. Id say this is a great tool for that.

For my younger children this is really not applicable. It’s nice to know what links they clicked, but on the whole I’m aware of their shenanigans online, it’s just matter of cutting access with my router for them.

So far I’m happy with this app View Original Review
