The orginal experience date of my review goes all the way back to October, 2021. Unfortunately I can’t select a date earlier than 2024 so… here we go.
I’m from the Netherlands (in Europe?) and I’ve always been interested in “American football” as it’s commonly called over here. So in October 2021 I finally decided to follow up on my curiosity and I purchased a copy of “Madden ‘22”; a game that’s all about (NFL) football. It was an instant hit with me, it taught me the basic rules of football and I also quickly found my way to the NFL website, where I quickly discovered the NFL gamepass: an option that allows you to watch football games - live - from anywhere over the world. At first I enjoyed the free tier, then during an actual live match I got so caught up in it that I nabbed the standard tier then and there (this got you access to ‘Redzone’, but not necessarily full game replays), and after watching a few more matches I went all out. I’ve been following the season ever since.
I consider myself lucky that I experienced the “real” NFL gamepass as it was once hosted on the NFL website itself, but at the same time I’m also very content with following the NFL season courtesy of DAZN.
Being from the Netherlands I kinda grew up with soccer, and while you won’t be getting any lame “this being better than that” kind of (nonsense) comments from me I still can’t help myself to briefly compare both the “KNVB” (= Dutch soccer association) as well as the UEFA with the NFL. Also because I find the results kinda shocking…
When talking about the NFL you often get comments like “greedy”, “it’s all about the money”, “lame service”, “lame this” and “lame that”. Heck… just check the reviews here!
Meanwhile the NFL has recently posted the full Superbowl LVII game between the Chiefs and the Eagles, freely accessible for everyone to enjoy: the full 2+ hours. Yet when you check the KNVB YouTube channel all you get are promotional videos, one after the other; forget about watching any actual soccer. Maybe some amateur videos lasting only 2 minutes or such.
UEFA anyone? At best you get some 5 minute videos that merely show you a collection of “great goals”, but nothing that actually reflects on any recent games.
Meanwhile the NFL shares interviews, documentaries and… many game highlights, most of which will easily last 15+ minutes and show you everything that’s been happening in that game. In addition to sharing some full games as well. How about… a FULL divisional game: Washington Commanders vs. the Detroit Lions? Smaller teams you say? Only 2 weeks ago (time of writing!) the NFL shared another iconic match from 2019: the Chiefs vs. the Texans, also fully free of charge.
I’ve enjoyed an NFL gamepass for the past 4 years now and I can tell you this: the videos on YouTube are of the same solid quality as those available on DAZN with said gamepass.
… and don’t get me started on all the awesome NFL originals. Many of which are also available free of charge.
Sure, NFL merch is expensive and the NFL gamepass also isn’t exactly cheap. But I truly believe that “you get what you pay for” holds true here, and given all of the above I’m also convinced that the NFL wants to both play and provide a fair game as well.
Maybe not perfect, ey, fair point. But I’ll take football over soccer any day of the week and I’m proud to call myself an overseas NFL football fan. View Original Review
