A Family’s Journey to Better Online Safety

Meet the Johnson family. Busy parents John and Sarah have three children: Ella (12), Max (9), and Lily (6). Like most parents, they were concerned about what their kids were doing online. After hearing about Qustodio through a parenting forum, they decided to give it a try.

Initially, Ella was resistant. After all, she was hitting her teenage years and felt capable handling herself online. However, John and Sarah took the time to explain how Qustodio could help them all feel secure while allowing her the freedom she craved. They told Ella about the app’s versatility—not just monitoring, but supporting her online growth and safety.

Once they set up Qustodio, John was shocked to discover that Max was spending nearly three hours a day playing games instead of doing homework. The app equipped them with the ability to set time limits and create a more balanced schedule.

Lily, the youngest, had stumbled onto some music videos featuring questionable content. With Qustodio, Sarah effortlessly blocked inappropriate sites while allowing access to educational resources and kid-friendly platforms.

Through steady communication and occasional family discussions around their Qustodio reports, the Johnsons not only managed their children’s online activities but also empowered their kids to make smart online choices. One family game night, John shared, “I love how Qustodio not only protects you guys but has also started discussions we never had before!”

The Johnsons found that Qustodio was not just a monitoring tool but a catalyst for building a healthier family dynamic around technology.

Weighing Strengths and Minor Drawbacks

Qustodio comes highly recommended, but it’s essential to be aware of both its strengths and some minor limitations.

Strengths:

  1. User-Friendly Interface: The design is intuitive, making it easy for parents to navigate without a steep learning curve.
  2. Multi-Device Support: Whether your child uses a computer, tablet, or smartphone, Qustodio has comprehensive support across all platforms.
  3. Exceptional Customer Support: Users often praise the company’s responsive customer service for any inquiries or troubleshooting.
  4. Regular Updates: The software is consistently updated to adapt to new online threats, ensuring your family’s safety.

Minor Drawbacks:

  1. Real-Time Tracking Challenges: Some users have noted a slight lag in real-time tracking, especially with location monitoring.
  2. Pricing Structure: While Qustodio offers a robust free version, its premium features require a subscription, which may not be ideal for every family budget.
  3. Limited Control Over Social Media Apps: Some parents feel the monitoring tools could be more effective when it comes to certain social media interactions.

When considering alternatives like Net Nanny or Norton Family, many parents find Qustodio to be more user-centric and adaptable, particularly when looking for a balanced approach to online safety without overly invasive measures.

Compared to the kids add-on apps for several anti-virus programs, this standalone app is by far the most seamless and effective. I honestly could not believe how well this app worked for iOS. The features are not excessive what so ever and are extremely practical. The way in which the app is able to monitor across the whole device is unbelievable. Absolutely recommend. With 6 children in my home (5 boys) it is a necessity to have parental controls beyond those provided by Apple or Google. And since we allowed our kids to have cell phones (big mistake, I should have avoided this permission altogether) I wanted an app that would allow for text message monitoring as well. Most apps on the market do not do this. It allows me to see call logs too, and we have caught children lying about using the phone late into the night when they should be in bed.

Google family allows downtime rules but a child can always make calls during downtime. With Qustodio I can block any or some calls or allow only certain contacts. I can also remotely block certain individuals (such as those throwing F bombs around or bullying in group texts).

I love that Qustodio is multi platform. We have android, mac, and windows and it works on each one, which is huge and truly makes this a one stop shop platform. Took awhile but I finally figured out how to assign it to specific users on the macs. I can set email notices for search engine and text use of concerning words or phrases for all devices.

There are many things that could be made more intuitive and easy to access. I don’t understand why there is not a larger/better up front menu and the majority of the features are hidden in sub or sub-sub menus making them a challenge to find. Perhaps this is meant to keep avg users from getting overwhelmed, but when it comes to parental controls I would think the avg user is ready to step into it. We do block google search on cell phones all together as I have not figured out how to use this app to do more than just monitor internet. Kids can navigate to something bad even without searching keywords and you’ll never know.

My kids have found a few workarounds. Qustodio can block access to settings on the phone but when it starts to load my kids have found they can swipe/close it out fast enough to bypass it and get into and change settings. I’m not sure if they figured out how to bypass Qustodio from here or not. (Side note, they also figured out how to use Spotify to watch inappropriate videos, even though it is set to kids and family mode).

Overall very happy with the price and features of this app especially for a larger family. Paying per user per device would simply have been cost prohibitive. I highly recommend parents also place a wi-fi camera facing the computers. I use Yi brand which does not charge monthly user fees and you can use SD card for historical access. View Original Review

This is my fourth app purchased. I’ve trued NetNanny, Bark Aura, then Qustodio. NetNanny was easily defeated by my then 10 year old. Bark was fantastic until my now 12 year old was able to “force stop” then uninstall it, it’s a glitch with Android 14 OS. Aura was easily uninstall able.

Now Qustodio. I like that it can lock out access to the device settings aswellas the app settings. Another feature that the others didn’t have was prohibiting access to the camera. I am a foster parent and my child isn’t allowed to have their image on the web so it’s a plus for me. Qustodio allows you to block specific web sites along with the standard ones like social media and others. It allows you to set schedules and screen time limits. So far, this is the only one that hadn’t been defeated by my child. Money well spent!! View Original Review

I purchased this program for my adult special needs nephew. It blocked ALL “mature” websites and any inappropriate sites. I was able to restrict the timeframe of his use and had the internet shutdown at 11 p.m. and come back on at 7 a.m. It helped to keep his sleep cycle more normal. I loved everything about the program. If anyone is having challenges, you may need to review the settings to get the results you need. I do not have any complaints about the Qustodio program. It was a relief that I was able to keep my nephew happy and safe while using the internet. The program has been on his computer and the app on my cell phone since March of 2021. View Original Review

I’m cautiously optimistic. This software is for windows platforms, and my android phone.

I read a lot of bad reviews here, but most echo having an iPhone .. I don’t have an iPhone. Also I don’t have an issue with my kids shutting it off. It would be far worse if they deleted the app. I don’t give two hoots if they have technology, and they know it. I’m going out of my way to help them develop self governance and self discipline. Id say this is a great tool for that.

For my younger children this is really not applicable. It’s nice to know what links they clicked, but on the whole I’m aware of their shenanigans online, it’s just matter of cutting access with my router for them.

So far I’m happy with this app View Original Review
